The day · Friday 27 November

How the day works

One Friday afternoon, two waves of golfers, one barbecue. Here is everything you need to know before you tee off.

The format

Two-player Ambrose

Nine holes, played as a team of two. Both of you hit a tee shot, you choose the better one, and you both play your next shot from there. Keep going until the ball is in the hole.

It is the friendliest format in golf. The newcomer gets a real chance to contribute, the low handicapper gets backup, and nobody has to hold up the group.

Shotgun start, two waves

Every team starts on a different hole at the same time, so everyone tees off together and finishes together. No waiting around for your tee time. Two teams share each hole, drawn at random when you register. See the draw.

The challenges

Every hole could go sideways.

Golf Break sets random challenges on the course, so nobody can plan a game. Expect twists like these (the final list will be confirmed on the day):

Golf Break hole01
The Golf Break hole

A random club is selected for you. Whatever comes out of the bag is what you play.

Curse02
Rival picks your club

The team behind you chooses what you hit, and has to say it out loud.

Curse03
Putter off the tee

Exactly as it sounds.

Dare04
Swap hats

Trade headwear with your partner for the hole. Dignity is optional.

Dare05
Call your shot

Say it before you hit it. Nail it and the glory is yours.

Powered by Golf Break

Fair for a 2. Fair for a 32.

Most golf days are won by the two best golfers in the field. Not this one. Golf Break's Fair Play Engine balances every challenge, so the player who plays off 4 and the one who has not swung a club since 2009 are in the same race.

Built for Ambrose day
  • Team handicaps for every pair, worked out for you.
  • A live team leaderboard on the clubhouse TV while the sausages cook.
  • The Golf Break hole: a random club is picked for you, and you play it.
  • Scores, challenges and results in one app, so nobody keeps a pencil card.
  • It only adjusts game points. It never touches anyone's official handicap.
How the Fair Play Engine works →
1Random for everyone

A dare, a challenge, a blessing or a curse. Nobody picks their card, so anyone can get anything.

2Reworded for your game

The app rewords each challenge for your handicap. A single-figure golfer has to shape it. A beginner just has to get it airborne and in play.

3Points that scale

Easy cards pay less for good golfers and hard cards pay more for beginners. No card pays less than half or more than one and a half times its base, so no single card swings the day.

4The Equaliser

Curses lean on the low markers, blessings on the high ones, and nobody gets cursed three holes running.

5No sandbagging

Handicaps are locked before the shotgun. No handicap? You play off 18. A failed card scores 0, and nobody ever loses points.

6It shows its working

Tap "Why this score?" on any total. No black boxes, no clubhouse arguments.

The prize · The Edithvale Lid

Win the Lid. Wear it for a year.

The top three teams each take home a one-of-a-kind Edithvale cap, embroidered with a crest, the year and your names stitched inside. There are only three, and nobody else can ever have one. Wear it at pick-up, the pub and the next barbecue, and when someone asks about it, you get to tell the story.

  1. 1st
Gold crest capChampions for a year, and your name on the Champions page
  2. 2nd
Silver crest capRunners-up, and the right to say "next year"
  3. 3rd
Bronze crest capOn the podium, and permanent hat-day glory

Teams also compete for best-dressed, best team name and a few secret categories on the night. Meet the champions →

not compulsory. but we are watching.

Matching attire

Teams that coordinate get bragging rights, and probably a prize. Think matching polos, ridiculous caps, a shared theme, or a team name that gets a laugh from the whole clubhouse. It is not compulsory, but we are watching.

Barbecue and awards

Sausages, scores and silverware.

After golf, it is back to the clubhouse for a barbecue and awards. Prizes for the winning team, the best-dressed pair, the best team name, and a few categories we will keep secret until the night.
